Audi are proud supporters of the making of MACHINE. We’re interested in the story of Artificial Intelligence, because it’s a big part of our story. Today AI is a hot topic. But, for the last 15 years, it’s been one of our biggest fields of research and development. Many people know us as manufacturers of luxury cars, but we’re also a leading authority in this new and exciting technology. We wanted to share our passion and expertise - investigating not only autonomous driving, but wider implications of AI and how it will change all of our lives.
Audi Aicon
The Audi Aicon is a Level 5 autonomous vehicle. This means always autonomous, all of the time. It’s not designed to be driven. Headlights and tail lights have gone - because it uses lasers, radar and sonar to see and feel its way around space. Seating can be rotated and moved in any direction. Because nobody has to do the driving, the Aicon is designed so that passengers can use their time much more constructively. At Audi, we call this extra time, the 25th Hour.
Audi Elaine
Audi Elaine is a Level 4 autonomous vehicle - which means driving is highly automated, but not fully autonomous. When the highway pilot is active, for example, the Audi Elaine can overtake, change lanes automatically and then return to the original lane. It can initiate, perform and complete such actions autonomously, without any involvement from the person behind the wheel. If the driver does want to intervene, they can do so spontaneously at any time.
Audi A8
The all-new Audi A8 is the first production car in the world developed to achieve conditional automated driving at level 3. With over 40 driver assistance systems, the driver can take his or her hands off the wheel, for periods, and let the A8 maintain speed and position on the road.
